Origin of the Iron Rod Display:
In 2001, as I was working on a project for the Young Men and Young Women in our Ward, the importance of patriarchal blessings in the lives of these young people weighed heavily on my mind. As I was preparing a joint activity for them involving a compass course that, if they answered the course questions correctly, would lead them safely to an "Iron Rod" display that we had set up in the Church parking lot. As I watched these young people search for the correct answers in their "For the Strength of the Youth" pamphlets, the idea of the "Iron Rod Display" came to my mind.
With the help of a dear friend, we machined the first Iron Rod Displays out of metal and then anodized them to give them the rich, distinctive look that they have. I then presented one of the displays to each of the youth and adults that had participated in our activity. Because of its uniqueness and the quality of the materials used, everyone that has seen them has been impressed with the sacred nature of its design and appearance. The gold colored end caps on the tube are threaded and screw into the tube providing a secure housing for sacred documents such as a patriarchal blessing, mission call and letters that have an inspirational significance. The tube then rests upon two gold colored columns that rise up from a base plate that reads "My Patriarchal Blessing - My Iron Rod". It is my sincere hope that these displays will help suggest to the mind of the recipient the constant need to nurture their spirit with good gifts from God.
